2019 saw Bro Radio present their first ever Election Hustings event for the Vale of Glamorgan, with all four standing candidates appearing in front of a live studio to answer our and their questions.

Myself and Matthew Harris presented the live show, which was aired on the station, as well as on our social media channels.

Together with Matthew and producer Nathan Spackman, we sat down and scripted the show, decided which of the big issues to ask questions about and most importantly, we tried our best to pick a fair and balanced audience, taking into consideration different ages, genders and political voting history.

As well as that, the station presented a live election night show, broadcasting through the night with reporters (including myself in Islwyn) giving updates from across South Wales, as well as looking at the UK wide picture too.

Below is the full Election Hustings programme hosted by myself and Matthew Harris.

Election Freelancing

My freelance work with the BBC came partly thanks to the work experience I had in June 2018, and also because of the contacts I was able to make.

I spent just under two weeks as a freelancer during election month last year, and had a number of jobs to work on whilst there.

Firstly I worked with a couple of other freelancers to set up a database with all of the photos of candidates who were standing in the election in Wales only. A big part of this was ringing all of the parties press offices and asking for them to send over candidate photos, and when they did, making sure they were the right quality and size so they could be broadcast on the election night shows and online.

I also worked with the BBC Wales and Network team in London for a couple of days as part of the election night practice runthroughs.

This was done so that they could check that all the technology was working correctly, and with a lot of results from across the UK coming in at the same time, it allowed them to get used to taking in all the information from constituencies up and down the country. My role in this was being one of the fake returning officers reading out fake results to test the system, and to help the presenters of the BBC Wales, S4C, and BBC News presenting teams get used to the logistics of the night.

Sky News

Election Night Results Reporter

Election night saw me head to the South Wales constituency Islwyn as a results reporter for Sky News.

Throughout the night I put together a thread on Twitter, featuring interviews with all the candidates standing in the Islwyn constituency.

Also, as mentioned above, during the night I was live on Bro Radio giving updates from Islwyn but also giving my view on the rest of results coming out across the UK.

This was the best way to end a very busy and exciting month of Election work, something which I would love to do again.

Below is my Twitter thread from the night, including interviews with the candidates standing in the Islwyn constituency.
